University of Memphis’ This is Memphis festival to bring top local talent to The Levitt Shell
Memphis, Tenn. – Purveyors of quality music would be pleased to know that the University of Memphis’ student-run record label, Blue TOM, is presenting their annual Fall music festival This is Memphis on October 11, 2015. The event, being held at the historic Levitt Shell will feature just a few of the many talented student artists from the university, including Ben Callicott, Mary Owens, Drew Erwin, and the Bluff City Soul Collective.
Ben Callicott is a versatile musician with influences of classic soul to modern indie very present in his sound. His easygoing, bluesy style can be compared to John Mayer and Jack Johnson. Though he writes and plays his own songs, Callicott is able to take classic songs and make them his own.
Mary Owens, Blue TOM’s recent signee, and an “Emerging Star” from David Porter’s Consortium MMT, will be serenading the crowd with songs from her recently released album “Sweet Soul.” According to the Memphis Flyer, Owens has “a voice that hovers over the chords until it strikes like lightning.”
Third on the lineup is Arlington native Drew Erwin. A rising star at 16 who was a finalist on America’s Got Talent, Erwin is a singer/songwriter with an obvious passion for his work. His dynamic vocals are able to conquer a range of styles, while he switches from guitar to piano. Erwin will be backed by his band of close friends and UM classmates.
Bluff City Soul Collective is a newly assembled band formed by students from the University. The twelve-piece supergroup consists of five top vocalists, a three-piece horn section, and a slamming rhythm section. Although it is their first year playing together under Bluff City, individually each member has years of musical experience that combined create an energetic fusion of raw, unparalleled talent.
As evident in the sounds of these artists, the spirit of Memphis music is a powerful influence on the young generation of local repertoire. This Is Memphis aims to support local music with this showcase, offering a hearty serving of Memphis-made music. Don’t miss out.
